Bowls in this shape are often referred to as “Paul Revere” or “Liberty” bowls. In 1767 the Sons of Liberty commissioned fellow member (and silversmith) Paul Revere to create a piece that honored the ninety-two members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives who refused to rescind a letter sent throughout the colonies protesting the Townshends Act. From that point onwards, bowls in this shape became referred to as a Paul Revere bowl in honor of his piece created for the Sons of Liberty.
