BIOGRAPHY OF MANUFACTURER
Virginia Metalcrafters (VM) was founded in 1895 as the W. J. Loth Stove Company of Waynesboro, Virginia. VM initially manufactured cast iron stoves and wood and coal heaters. In 1938 William Loth installed a brass foundry and Virginia Metalcrafters became the brand name of the company’s brass and iron giftware line. VM produced historic reproductions for The Smithsonian, Mount Vernon, Historical Charleston, Old Sturbridge Village, Colonial Williamsburg and Historical Newport, they became well known around the world for the fine quality of the items which they produced. 1940 marked the first use of the VM Betty Lamp hallmark on their products. When brass was once again available after World War II, production was resumed and their gift line was expanded. Charles Eckman bought the firm in 1953 and incorporated VM under the name Virginia Metalcrafters, Inc. In 1956 Virginia Metalcrafters acquired the Harvin Company of Baltimore, makers of fine brassware. VM moved in 1941 from its initial location in Waynesboro to an existing industrial complex built in 1925. The company expanded and occupied the complex until its closing in 2006.
