Vintage Design
A folding chair model Oscar, designed by Swedish architect Olle Pira in 1955 for the manufacturer String Design. This is a rare version of Pira’s Piraten chair, which was launched by Nordiska Kompaniet somewhat earlier. It features a foldable frame made from tubular steel, upholstered in a thick textile held in place by flag halyard. The cabinetmaker Olof “Olle” Pira was born in the Swedish town of Karlskrona in 1927 and studied at the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. He is best known today for his storage systems and shelves designed for Nisse Strinning’s company, String Design, in the mid-1950s. Pira opened his own architectural studio in 1955 and later became principal at Carl Malmsten’s vocational school in the early 1980s. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 91.
