This original mixed-media titled “Paysage #12” is by French artist Danielle Desplan.

Desplan’s technique is unique. She mixes gesso, paint and collage to result in works on paper that invoke memory, nostalgia and emotion.

This collage features a French provincial village with red roofed houses and church steeples. The foreground of this mixed-media on paper features fields of orange tulips and red poppies. The borders of the collage feature flower motifs and gilt designs.

This piece is framed in glass and surrounded by a silver-painted frame.

This unique artwork is perfect for collectors of abstract or provincial art. The piece would be at home in French and eclectic-styled settings. House-ready.

About the artist:

Desplan uses painting as a medium to translate impressions, emotions and memories into a visual format. The techniques involved are based on the superimposition of several layers of gesso, paint and collages.

The initial background is handmade paper painted with gesso. Then, several layers of collaged fragments are added, producing a three-dimensional effect – incorporating textured handmade paper, wall paper, printed elements, calligraphy, etc… – to create a distinctive, antiquarian appearance.

The original image has thus been reformulated along with the collage elements and is integrated into a singular work of art, combining several techniques and media such as graphite, watercolor and printmaking.

The final effect is that of a delicately burnished and finely weathered patina. Drawn upon the past, the artwork becomes a magical interplay between the formal and the symbolic, antiquity and present, time and place, while creating a personal genre of modern fresco.
