Fireplace chairs were universally popular during the colonial era. Positioned on the large fireplace heart (which would have also been the “stove”), the chair allowed its occupant to keep their legs stretched out before them, positioning the feet parallel to the fire for warmth.
Today, this would be the perfect chair for an adored feline or canine companion, as the seat’s mere 13″ height from the ground makes it easy for a small dog or cat to leap onto. I would suggest a pillow on the rush seat because it is in excellent condition and we’d all love for it to stay that way. The chair was re-caned at some point in its past.
There are nicks, dents and abrasions, but they evaporate when the chair is seen as a whole. The wood appears to be old-growth maple with a dark walnut patina. The arms of this chair are smooth in a way no grit of sandpaper could ever achieve. Only centuries of resting, gripping, rubbing can create a prize finish like this.
