This beautiful dinnerware set comes with 21 individual pieces: 1 oblong/oval shaped serving platter dish with indent to one side for collection of juices from meats or can be used to separate dips/sauces. 6 larger dinner plates. 2 bread & butter plates. 4 saucer plates with 4 footed demitasse (half-cup) coffee / tea cups. 3 soup style bowls. 1 smaller sized fruit / dessert (sauce) bowl.
All pieces are stamped at bottom with “Theodore Haviland New York, Made in America”. A number of pieces also contain the word “Milford”; which is the name for this specific design and pattern. Each piece is trimmed with the “gold encrusted heart” pattern and a thinner gold circular accent towards the center interior of each piece. The outermost interior portions are a soft cream color, while the center interior leans white in color.
Condition: Overall great condition for the age. There are some scattered minor spots, wear and scratches to edges of gold trim and porcelain body. Some chips/wear to the base of select pieces. Please refer to last photo collage (#14) for close-up views of the stated imperfections.
In 1840, David Haviland, who had a china shop in New York City, made his first trip to France to establish an alliance with a manufacturer who could create pieces of porcelain for the American trade. After the Civil War, David tasked his son, Théodore Haviland, to handle distribution and marketing. Théodore left the company to start his own in 1893. Because of the approaching hostilities in Europe, Théodore moved his company to the United States in 1936, where it operated until 1957.
