The signature and date are difficult to read (strong ink but sketchy penmanship!), but certainly appears to be that of Josiah Wolcott (American: 1814 – 1885), a Boston artist who was active from 1835 to 1857 and was known for his New England landscapes. His painting of The Flume in New Hampshire’s White Mountains was exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum in 1837.
It is remarkable to see such an early eye-witness view of the venerable Charles River as it was in such a pristine, unspoiled countryside.
The painting is in excellent condition, recently cleaned, and with one tiny invisible spot professionally restored in the lower center where it had chipped.
